Celebrating The Queen’s Jubilee

Industry News

This week, the UK is celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which marks seventy years of service. As we witness such a historical moment – HM Queen Elizabeth II being the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee – we take a look back at how the UK advertising industry has commemorated past royal jubilee celebrations.

SILVER JUBILEE, 1977

In 1977, HM The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, marking twenty-five years on the throne. To commemorate, she travelled together with HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, more than 50,000 miles on a series of tours around Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands – as well as 36 counties in Scotland, England and Wales. To finish the tour, she hosted a garden party at Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland.

On Jubilee Day, June 7, HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh processed in the Gold State Coach to St Paul’s Cathedral for a service of thanksgiving.

Chivas Regal Whisky marked the occasion with the below ad. Simple, yet attention-grabbing, the ad read: ‘If Jubilee isn’t a Regal occasion, then what is?’

Shloer also wanted to celebrate the occasion with a funny, comic-style ad. In the comic strip, we can see the family making a toast to HM The Queen, with some unexpected remarks..

GOLDEN JUBILEE, 2002

In 2002, The Queen celebrated 50 years of service. For the occasion, she toured – together with Prince Phillip – the UK and the Common Wealth, and held a concert at Buckingham Palace followed by a firework display.

DIAMOND JUBILEE, 2012

The Diamond Jubilee marks 60 years of service, a record only previously matched by Queen Victoria (1897) in the history of the British monarchy.

Multiple festivities took place both in the UK and around the world, attended by an estimated 8.5 million in the UK alone. On June 2, to mark the Queen’s coronation, a 62-gun salute was fired at the Tower of London and elsewhere.

For the Diamond Jubilee, Finish asked us to “Toast the Queen in style”, with a special give-away of 60,000 champagne flutes.
