The Year of the Tiger (Ads)

Industry News

Today marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year, a holiday widely celebrated in China and many other Asian countries.

According to Chinese astrology, this is the Year of the Tiger – a creature that symbolizes vitality, power, bravery, and majesty. As our industry recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, we feel in good fortune. We do hope that the Tiger helps us on our journey to build back better and create a more inclusive, sustainable and trusted advertising industry.

The Year of the Tiger will also see our UK Advertising Exports Group support the growing trade between China and the UK through the continued strong friendship with the Chinese Advertising Association (CAA) and the Shanghai International Advertising Festival (SHIAF).

Over the last few years, UKAEG members have come to China and SHIAF to meet with peers. As a result of these friendships several UK advertising related companies now work with China brands; PingPong Digital, VCCP, Crowd, MBA, Qumin, and Across the Pond. We are looking forward to hosting our Chinese colleagues at our fourth trade mission to China later in the year.

We want to see the UK as China’s home from home and the first place they come to when expanding their business. The UKAEG welcomes Chinese brand owners, platforms and agencies to work with us to fulfil their global ambitions.

The below campaigns show how a selection of brands (and agencies) are welcoming the Tiger’s energy into this year.

Scroll down to get roaring!

 1. OGILVY

Chris Reitermann, CEO of Ogilvy Asia and Greater China took the bravery of the tiger to a whole new level by dressing up in period costume and makeup in a film sent to the Ogilvy staff. The piece was accompanied by a note that encouraged his employees to “bring the powerful energy of the tiger forward.”

2. GUCCI

The luxury fashion brand GUCCI welcomes the Year of the Tiger with the launching of their campaign: Tiger Teatime.

In its promotional video – which you can watch here – a majestic tiger walks into the room and joins the tea-time table. The creature is welcomed by a group of models dressed up in the brand’s latest collection, which features the tiger as its main motif.

3. COCA COLA

A group of tigers also sit at the table on Coca Cola’s animated film. Seems like this drink can be the object of discussion for this feline family… Check out the video here

4. TIGER BEER

South Korean football icon Son Heung-Min stars in Tiger Beer’s promotional film about the unlimited power of the tiger, the video encourages us to make this “our” year. Click here for the full video.

5. APPLE

The Californian-based tech giant seems to have taken this holiday quite seriously, releasing a 22-minute-long film, under the title “The Comeback”. Watch the story of a father, a son and a forgotten village with an out-of-this-world dream here

6. BMW

For BMW, the Year of the Tiger is all about vibrant colours and uplifting music. Tigers in multiple forms and animations appear to be enjoying the brand’s cars in what can only be described as a positive and cheerful view of this new year. Check out the full clip here.

7. LEGO

LEGO takes us home with Malaysian Youtuber Danny Ah Boy, in a film that praises the conservation of family traditions. Things may change, but the tiger LEGO decorations will always be there.
