Sector Comparison

UK Advertising Exports Hub

Figure 5 presents a comparison of advertising and marketing export figures with other service sectors in the UK. Of the sectors compared (this has been a consistent selection every year since the publication of this export report) advertising and marketing exports remain third placed in terms of export value.

Advertising and marketing export growth between 2020 and 2021 was flat in comparison to other sectors such as computer services and insurance and pension services. However, it did perform better than other sectors such as engineering, information services and telecommunication services which recorded declines year-on-year.

It is important to note that the data used in this graph was sourced from the ONS Pink Book’s Chapter 3 Trade in Services [1]. The Pink Book contains information on balance of payments accounts and detailed statistics for the current account including – trade in goods and services income current and capital transfers transactions in UK external assets and liabilities and is slightly different to the data published in the quarterly ONS UK trade in services dataset. This is because data in the Pink Book is lagged and is subject to annual benchmarking and hence why it only extends to 2021. Despite the Pink Book not having the most up-to-date revisions, it remains a useful tool, as it provides a more consistent basis to compare advertising and marketing exports with other sectors.
