Tory-fic news
Valiantly battling with her own lurgy, the Prime Minister set out an agenda firmly focused on the nation’s bill of health in front of the Tory faithful at this year’s party conference. Gambling advertising took a hit from Chris Philp MP, despite acknowledging ASA action on the issue – but on alcohol consumption, responsible advertising and lowered drinking rates were harder to fault.
Up in Scotland, Holyrood’s new Diet and Obesity strategy consultation opens later this month. Hot on the heels of next year’s Government programme, which made unwelcome reference to ad restrictions on HFSS foods, it marks a move from a previous focus on product reformulation and in-store promotions. Our resident correspondent is keeping an eye on the policy officials in charge of the consultation – pick up the phone to Lauren if you’d like your two cents in our response.
Later in the week, the AA met with DExEU Parliamentary Undersecretary Robin Walker MP and Business Department officials (including Lord Prior) in the company of the Professional Business Services Council. There’s work in progress on how to unite our sectors to encourage growth in the regions and nations in light of the Government’s Industrial Strategy. If you’re looking for a catch up on this and more Tory Party Conference gossip, Michael’s got you covered.
Laying the groundwork
After getting schooled by advertising’s best and brightest young talents at Last One Standing last week, where we learned the relevance and longevity of our industries’ words of wisdom, we could make a habit of going back to basics.
You’re in luck. The IPA’s Foundation Certificate returns for a fresh intake of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed ad grads. This award-winning, industry-recognised entry-level qualification gives you the know-how and confidence to navigate adland in the early stages of your career.
Interested? First 50 sign ups through advertising matters get a tasty 10% off the course; just hit up Kate for your promo code. Even better, you won’t have to sit an exam until February. Sharpen those pencils, and start with a Last One Standing refresher course.
And finally…
Head of Credos Karen Fraser imparted some valuable insight on a Festival of Marketing crowd gathered at the Tobacco Docks last week – alongside fellow researchers Simpson Carpenter and PrideAM President Mark Runacus.
There to hear more about how to connect with the modern consumer’s increasingly hard to pin down interests and habits, Karen enlightened listeners on the lack of representation of ethnic and LGBT+ minorities in advertising – with the former covered by Credos in 2014’s The Whole Picture.
Couldn’t make it? The full session will be up on PrideAM in the near future.
You’ve read the whole thing! You deserve a treat – our ad of the week:
