The House of Lords Food, Diet and Obesity Committee has published their report which recommends that the Government should develop a long-term strategy for the UK’s food system, underpinned by a new legislative framework.
In response, a spokesperson for the Advertising Association said:
“We note the recommendations of the Committee’s report. The evidence continues to show that socio-economic deprivation and lack of access to healthy food are the main drivers of obesity in the UK. Investment in health advertising campaigns has a much greater positive impact on people’s health than advertising bans and restrictions, where the evidence to support further restrictions is lacking.
“We will continue to work closely with the Government and the regulator on the implementation of the restrictions on TV and online advertising due to come into place in October 2025. We look forward to working with the Government on how health-focused advertising campaigns can be used to drive positive health outcomes and meet their ambitions on preventative healthcare.”
