This week, the Liberal Democrats gathered in a sunny Brighton following their most successful election in modern history. Party leader Ed Davey, likened to the “Tom Cruise of British politics” for his hands-on approach, continued his energetic momentum from the election campaign trail.
Of the record 72 LibDem MPs, 61 are new to Parliament, but they are guided by Ed Davey, who brings significant experience, having served as an MP since 1997 (with a brief break). His leadership is set to play a pivotal role in navigating this fresh group of MPs through this Parliament as they are the third largest party in Westminster which brings advantages, for example third question at PMQs.
The party’s strategy for this Parliament is clear: a strong focus on health and social care, evidenced by a speech from deputy leader Daisy Cooper, and having a LibDem Chair of the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee. Additionally, fostering closer ties with Europe will also be a key priority if the economic challenges remain and, as a continuation from the election campaign, a focus on the environment. Helped also as they now Chair the House of Commons Environment Select Committee.
Their message to the new LibDems MPs is clear: work hard locally, champion your constituencies, and build on the party’s success to secure more seats and majorities at the next election. Ed Davey also acknowledged the importance of “trust” for the party going forward, describing it as the party’s mandate.
Next week, political attention shifts to Liverpool for the Labour Party conference, where an expected 22,000 delegates are expected. Keir Starmer is anticipated to deliver a vision-heavy, policy lite agenda with a more optimistic narrative, in contrast to recent tones. The AA will be on the ground in Liverpool working hard to raise the profile and success of our industry. We look forward to seeing many of our members there too.
This was a report from our Policy and Government Affairs Director, Lisa Hayley-Jones. Please get in touch with our PGA team PGA@adassoc.org.uk to find out more about our activities at the upcoming party conferences.
