Advertising saves lives. That is the simple truth behind why charities, governments, and local authorities dedicate multi-million pound investments in public health messaging every year. Whether raising awareness of cancer screenings, promoting support for mental health conditions, or ensuring the take-up of winter vaccines among vulnerable groups, advertising is a crucial driver of better public health.
Through programmes like ‘Eat Them to Defeat Them’ and ‘The Daily Mile’ and collaborations with local councils, our members also directly fund and promote public health campaigns. Advertising can play a valuable role in supporting broader holistic, evidence-based policies which drive improvements in the health and wellbeing of the population.
The independent co- and self-regulatory system, overseen by the ASA, ensures that adverts for products from alcohol to junk food to gambling are subject to strict rules about their content and placement. The rules are regularly reviewed and updated based on the latest available evidence and the ASA has the power to hold advertisers accountable for adverts which breach these.
